About Us

X-Cell Laboratories of WNY, Inc. (X-Cell) is an independent commercial reference laboratory specializing in anatomic and clinical pathology, hematopathology, and community cancer diagnostics. X-Cell provides laboratory services to hospitals, healthcare systems, clinics, and privately-owned medical practices throughout Western New York and beyond.

Client Services

At X-Cell Laboratories, our clinical technologists and technicians process specimens from a comprehensive menu of laboratory tests and services.

Anatomic Surgical Pathology

X-Cell specializes in the microscopic examination of biopsies and tissue specimens collected during various types of procedures. Our pathologists will analyze and diagnose specimens to help clinicians treat their patients accordingly.

Cytogenetics

X-Cell offers cytogenetic testing using chromosome analysis. Karyotypes can be done to detect chromosome abnormalities that can be found in congenital or various neoplastic and cancer processes.

Prenatal, perinatal, and cancer testing can be done on:

  • Bone marrow
  • Peripheral blood

Flow Cytometry

X-Cell offers malignant leukocyte immunophenotyping using several leukemia and lymphoma panels by flow cytometry. Immunophenotypic analysis of white blood cells can aid in distinguishing between non-neoplastic and malignant disease states. Flow cytometry is performed as an ancillary test to help diagnose and characterize disease entities such as acute leukemias, lymphoproliferative disorders, myeloid neoplasms, and plasma cell dyscrasias.

Sample types:

  • Bone marrow
  • Peripheral blood
  • Tissue

Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization (FISH)

Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) is a technique used to detect and locate a specific DNA sequence on a chromosome.

FISH testing can be done on breast and gastric tissue removed during a surgical procedure to see if the cells have extra copies of the Her2 gene. Testing can help facilitate a cancer diagnosis by concentrating on the genetic material in a patient's cells. Results of the test can help guide treatment and cancer care.

FISH testing can also be done on bone marrow and peripheral blood samples to look for abnormal genes involved in certain types of blood cancer.

Gynecologic Cytology

X-Cell offers liquid-based cytology and conventional cytology methods for the analysis of pap smear specimens as part of our women's health test menu. Pap smears are done by collecting cells from the cervical or vaginal area and submitting the sample for analysis. This test is useful as an aid in detecting precancerous and cancerous cells, as well as other cervical and vaginal problems and inflammation. Pap testing can be ordered with or without HPV testing.

Sample types:

  • ThinPrep Pap Test
  • SurePath Pap Test
  • Conventional Pap Smear

Hematopathology

Hematopathology is a division of pathology that deals with diseases of the blood and blood-forming organs. X-Cell specializes in the diagnosis of hematologic diseases using morphologic, cytochemical, and immunophenotypic analysis of several types of specimens.

Hematopathology categories:

  • Bone marrow aspirates
  • Bone marrow clots
  • Core bone biopsies
  • Peripheral blood
  • Lymph nodes

Immunohistochemistry

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) can be used in conjunction with histopathology to help define or categorize a diagnosis. X-Cell can provide special stains and antibodies that can be ordered after initial examination of a tissue specimen.

  • 75+ Antibodies
  • 20+ Select Tumor Panels

Test results can be used to help classify disease and guide treatment options. Samples include, but are not limited to, bone, breast, lymph node, mandible, paracentesis, parotid, thoracentesis, thyroid, and vertebra.

Sample types:

  • Body fluid
  • Fine needle Aspiration
  • Urine Cytology
